If you had to compress the entire gospel into one sentence, Paul has already done it: "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (). Slow down over every part of it, because there is a whole universe of good news packed into that single line.
He who knew no sin. That is Jesus, the only human being who ever lived without a single fault, no debt of His own, nothing to answer for. Made to be sin for us. On the cross, the sinless one took the full weight of everything that was ours: the guilt, the failure, the record we could never clear. He did not merely sympathise with sinners. He stood in their place and took the judgment they had earned. And the purpose of it, the reason He did it, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Not merely forgiven. Not merely let off. Clothed in a righteousness that was never ours, standing before God as though we had lived the life Jesus lived.
Insight: The gospel is not God lowering the standard so you can reach it. It is God meeting the standard on your behalf and crediting it to your account.
This is why grace can never be earned, only received. There is nothing to add to an exchange that is already finished. You do not clean yourself up to qualify for the robe; you receive the robe and are made clean. Every other religion in the world hands you a ladder and tells you to climb. The gospel announces that the climbing is over, because the One who had no need to descend came all the way down to where you were and traded places with you.
If you have never received this exchange, it is the most important transaction of your life, and it is not a matter of becoming good enough first. It is a matter of coming, empty-handed, and taking what He is holding out. He took what was yours. Will you receive what is His?
Pray this: Lord Jesus, thank You for taking my sin and offering me Your righteousness. I bring You nothing but empty hands. I receive the exchange You made on the cross, and I trust in Your finished work alone. Make me Yours. Amen.
