When Israel finally reached the edge of the promised land, the last obstacle was a river, and not a calm one. Scripture is careful to tell us the Jordan was overflowing all its banks; it was harvest season, flood stage, the worst possible time to attempt a crossing. God's instruction to the priests carrying the ark was not what you would expect. He did not part the waters and then invite them across. He told them to step into the river, and promised that as soon as their feet touched the water's edge, it would stand up in a heap ().
Read that order carefully, because it is the order of almost every step of faith God asks of us. The feet had to get wet first. The priests had to walk toward a flooding river carrying the ark, with no visible reason to believe the ground would hold, and the miracle waited on their obedience. Had they stood on the bank sensibly waiting for proof, they would have waited there forever. The water rolled back only for feet that were already moving.
Insight: God often withholds the evidence until He sees the obedience. Faith is not the feeling that it will work. It is the step you take before you feel it.
This is where so many promises stall in our lives. We are willing to obey once the path is clear, once the fear has lifted, once we feel ready. But God rarely works in that sequence. He asks for the step while the river is still in flood, while the outcome is still hidden, while everything in us is asking for one more sign before we commit. And the moment of parting is reserved for the foot that trusts Him enough to move first.
I have stood on many riverbanks, waiting for a confidence that was only ever going to come on the other side of the step. The water does not roll back for the cautious. It rolls back for the obedient. Whatever God has told you to step into, the difficult conversation, the calling, the surrender you keep deferring, the ground will hold. But you will have to move before you can feel it.
Pray this: Lord, I have been waiting on the bank for a certainty that only comes once I move. Give me the courage to step in while the river is still high. I trust that the ground will hold because You have said it will. Amen.
