So much of our striving comes from a single, unspoken fear, that we are not truly wanted, and must therefore earn our place by performing well enough to be kept. We carry it into our work, our relationships, even our walk with God, always auditioning, always half-afraid that the moment we stop proving our worth, we will be let go. Into that anxious striving, Paul drops a truth so large it takes a lifetime to absorb: "He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world... having predestined us to adoption as sons" ().
Read the timing of it. Before the foundation of the world. Before you were born, before you had achieved anything or failed at anything, before you could recommend yourself to God in any way at all, you were already chosen. Your belonging does not rest on your performance, because it was settled before your performance existed. God did not pick you because you turned out well. He set His love on you before there was a "you" to evaluate.
Insight: You were not chosen because you were valuable. You became valuable because you were chosen. The love came first, and everything else flows from it.
And notice the word Paul uses for what we were chosen into: adoption. Not employment. Not probation. Sonship. An employee has to keep earning their place; a son belongs by birth and by love. Adoption is the deliberate, costly decision to take someone who was not yours and make them fully, permanently family, with all the inheritance, all the name, all the security that carries. That is what God did with you. Not hired you. Adopted you.
This changes the whole posture of the Christian life. You are no longer working to be accepted; you are working from an acceptance already secured. You do not obey God in order to be loved. You obey Him because you already are. The striving quiets, not because effort disappears, but because its root fear has been pulled out, you are not auditioning for a place you already hold.
If the deepest question of your heart has always been "am I truly wanted?", Ephesians answers it before you can even finish asking. Yes. Before the world was made. Chosen, adopted, and kept, not by the strength of your grip on God, but by the strength of His grip on you.
Pray this: Father, thank You that You chose me before I existed and adopted me as Your own. Free me from the exhausting need to earn my place. Let me live from Your acceptance, not for it. I belong to You. Amen.
