Do Not Despise Small Beginnings
Do Not Despise Small Beginnings

When the exiles returned to rebuild the temple, the new foundation was a disappointment. The older men who remembered Solomon's temple wept, because what they were now laying looked so poor beside the glory they had lost. It was small. It was unimpressive. It was easy to despise. Into that discouragement God spoke a question that still cuts: "For who has despised the day of small things?" (). And He added something startling, His own eyes rejoiced to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel's hand.
Heaven's arithmetic is not ours. We measure by size; God measures by faithfulness. Look at the pattern all through Scripture. He begins enormous things with embarrassingly small materials. A mustard seed. A widow's two coins. A boy's packed lunch of loaves and fish. A stable in a town too small to matter. God has a documented habit of starting what will fill the earth with something you could hold in one hand.
Insight: God is not impressed by scale. He is moved by obedience, and He specialises in seeds.
This is why despising the small thing is so dangerous. The ministry that begins with three people in a living room. The business run from a kitchen table. The book written in stolen hours. The quiet discipline no one applauds. We are tempted to wait until it is bigger before we take it seriously, not realising that the smallness is precisely where the faithfulness is being tested and the foundation is being laid.
Do not despise it. God is not watching your beginning with disappointment. According to His own word, He is watching it with joy.
Pray this: Lord, guard me from despising what You have entrusted to me simply because it is small. Give me the faithfulness to steward the seed, and the patience to let You grow it in Your time. Amen.
