I struggle with anxiety and depression — where is God in that?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScripturePsalm 34:18
First, hear this clearly: anxiety and depression are not proof of weak faith or hidden sin. Faithful believers throughout Scripture walked through deep darkness — Elijah wanted to die, David wept through the night, even Jesus was “sorrowful unto death” in Gethsemane. God did not abandon any of them, and He has not abandoned you. God meets us in the darkness, not only on the far side of it. He is “nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.” Cast your cares on Him honestly, lean on His people, and let the Psalms give voice to what you feel. Small faithful rhythms — rest, prayer, Scripture, sunlight, movement, community — are means of grace, not signs of failure. And please know that seeking help is wise and godly. Depression and anxiety often have physical and medical dimensions, and God works through doctors, counsellors, and sometimes medication just as truly as through prayer. Scripture: — “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Take this step: Tell one trusted person how you are really doing this week, and if the heaviness is persistent, make an appointment with your doctor or a counsellor. Reaching out is a step of courage and faith.
Prayer
Father, thank You for meeting me in my questions. Give me wisdom to understand Your truth, faith to trust You where I cannot yet see, and grace to walk it out today. Anchor my heart in Psalm 34:18. In Jesus' name, amen.
