How do I overcome a sin or habit I keep returning to?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
Scripture1 Corinthians 10:13
Persistent sin is rarely defeated by willpower alone, because it is usually feeding a deeper hunger — for comfort, escape, control, or love. Lasting freedom comes less from gritting your teeth and more from finding in Christ the satisfaction the sin counterfeits. Starve the root, not just the fruit. Practically, three things make an enormous difference. First, bring it into the light: secret sin grows in darkness and withers under honest confession to God and to a trusted believer. Second, cut off access and triggers ruthlessly — Jesus spoke of cutting off the hand for a reason. Third, replace the habit; an empty space refills, so build new rhythms of worship, service, and accountability into the gap. Expect setbacks without surrendering to them. Sanctification is a war, not a single battle. When you fall, get up quickly, confess, and keep walking — the direction of your life matters more than any single stumble. Scripture: — “God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape.” Take this step: Confess the specific struggle to one trusted, mature believer this week and ask them to check in on you regularly. Then remove one concrete source of access or temptation today. If the struggle is an addiction, seek professional support as well.
Prayer
Father, thank You for meeting me in my questions. Give me wisdom to understand Your truth, faith to trust You where I cannot yet see, and grace to walk it out today. Anchor my heart in 1 Corinthians 10:13. In Jesus' name, amen.
