When Paul came to Berea, he found a people unlike any other. As records, they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. They did not simply accept his preaching, nor did they reject it out of suspicion.
This is the posture we are called to. Eagerness without examination becomes gullibility. Examination without eagerness becomes cynicism. The Bereans held both together, open hearts and careful minds. Jesus Himself urged the same in , telling us to search the Scriptures, for in them we find life.
To read the Bible this way is to come humbly, expecting to be taught, while also testing every claim against the text itself. Like the blessed one in , may we delight in the law of the Lord and meditate on it day and night. May we be a people of more noble character, searching the Scriptures daily.
