John 21:17
You messed up. Maybe badly. And now a quiet voice keeps telling you that is it — you had your shot and you blew it. That voice is not God's. Ask the disciple who denied Him three times and got everything back.
Peter blew it in the worst possible way. On the night Jesus needed him most, Peter denied even knowing Him, three times, to strangers, cursing to make it convincing. Then the rooster crowed, and Peter remembered Jesus had said this would happen, and he went out and wept bitterly. If anyone had ever earned the label "disqualified," it was him. He would have agreed. His story, as far as he was concerned, was over.
Except Jesus was not finished. After the resurrection, He meets the disciples by the sea, cooks them breakfast on a beach, and then turns to Peter. Three times Peter had denied Him; three times Jesus now asks, "do you love Me?" (). It was not to rub it in. It was to undo it, one restoring question for each denial. And then Jesus recommissions him: "Feed My sheep." The man who failed most spectacularly is handed the future.
Real talk: God is not looking for people who have never fallen. He is looking for people who will get back up when He reaches out His hand. Your failure is not the end of your story unless you decide it is.
That voice telling you that you are finished, that you had your chance and ruined it, that God is done with you, that voice is a liar. Shame speaks in absolutes: always, never, ruined, too late. Grace speaks in second chances. The whole gospel is essentially the news that disqualified people get restored, that the cross exists precisely for the people who blew it.
You are not the worst thing you have done. You are not your biggest mistake. If Jesus could hand the keys of the early church to the guy who publicly denied Him days earlier, He can absolutely still use you. Get up. Take the hand. Come and have breakfast.
Try this this week: Name the thing you feel disqualified by, and then bring it honestly to God instead of hiding from Him with it. Restoration starts with coming back, not with getting it perfect.
Pray this: Jesus, I've been believing I'm disqualified. Thank You that You restore people who fail. I bring You my mess-up now instead of running from You with it. Give me a fresh start, and use me anyway. Amen.
