Galatians 6:7
The shortcut feels so smart in the moment — the copied answers, the little lie, the corner cut when no one is looking. But there is a law running quietly underneath your whole life, and it has never once been broken.
There is a law written into how the world works, and it is as reliable as gravity. Paul states it plainly: "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap" (). Sow one thing, harvest that same thing. It sounds obvious with plants, nobody plants corn and expects apples. But we constantly try to break the rule with our choices, planting shortcuts and dishonesty and laziness while somehow expecting a harvest of trust, success and peace.
The reason the shortcut is so tempting is that the harvest is delayed. You copy the homework and nothing bad happens today. You tell the small lie and get away with it this time. You cut the corner and no one notices. So it feels free. But sowing and reaping never happen on the same day. The seed goes in quietly now; the harvest comes later, and when it comes, it always matches what was planted. The student who cheated their way through never actually learned the thing. The person who built their reputation on lies watches it collapse the moment one is discovered.
Real talk: Getting away with it and getting away from it are two different things. You can dodge the consequence today and still be growing the harvest you will eat later.
But here is the encouraging flip side, because this law works both ways. Every good seed counts too. The honest effort nobody praised. The kindness that seemed to go unnoticed. The discipline you built when it would have been easier to quit. None of it is wasted. You are quietly sowing a future self, and every faithful seed is going somewhere. Paul says it right after: do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season you will reap if you do not lose heart.
So the question underneath every choice is simple: what am I planting? Because one day, without fail, you will eat exactly what you grew.
Try this this week: Catch one shortcut you were about to take, a copied answer, a small lie, a dodged responsibility, and choose the honest way instead. You are planting the harvest you actually want.
Pray this: God, help me see past the shortcut to the harvest it grows. Give me the patience to sow good seeds even when no one notices, and the honesty to stop planting what I do not want to reap. Amen.
