Genesis 50:20
Joseph's own brothers sold him into slavery and told his father he was dead. Years later he had all the power to destroy them — and chose a sentence that set him free instead of them. It is still the hardest, most powerful thing a person can say.
If anyone had a right to hold a grudge, it was Joseph. His own brothers, jealous of him, threw him in a pit, sold him to slave traders, and lied to their father that he was dead. He lost years of his life to their betrayal. Then, through an extraordinary turn of events, Joseph ended up second in command of all Egypt, and one day those same brothers were standing in front of him, not recognising him, completely at his mercy. He could have crushed them. Nobody would have blamed him.
Instead, he wept, revealed who he was, and later said one of the most freeing sentences in the whole Bible: "you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good" (). He did not pretend it did not happen. He did not say it was fine. He named the evil honestly, and then he chose to release them and trust God with the story. That is what forgiveness actually is. Not pretending you were not hurt. Choosing not to let the person who hurt you keep controlling your life.
Real talk: Holding a grudge feels like power over the person who wronged you. In reality it is a rope tying you to them. You cannot move forward while you are still gripping what they did.
Here is the part we get wrong. We think forgiving someone lets them off the hook. But usually the person who hurt you has moved on, while you are the one still carrying it, replaying it, letting it poison your mood and your peace. Forgiveness is less about setting them free and more about setting you free. Joseph did not forgive because his brothers deserved it. He forgave because he refused to spend the rest of his life chained to their worst moment.
There is probably a name that came to mind as you read this. A friend, a family member, someone who genuinely wronged you. Forgiving them will be one of the hardest things you ever do. It will also be one of the most freeing.
Try this this week: Name the person you are holding something against, and take one honest step toward release, a prayer, a conversation, or simply the decision to stop rehearsing it. You are freeing yourself.
Pray this: God, You know what was done to me and how much it hurt. Help me forgive, not because they deserve it, but because I do not want to be chained to it anymore. Set me free the way You set Joseph free. Amen.
