James 1:19
Anger is not the sin. What you do in the ten seconds after it shows up — that is where it all goes right or wrong. And those are the ten seconds most people never learn to slow down.
Somebody says the thing. Does the thing. Posts the thing. And instantly the heat rises in your chest and your thumbs are already moving toward a reply you are going to regret. We have all been there. Here is what most people get wrong: they think the problem is feeling angry. It is not. The Bible does not tell you never to feel angry. It tells you what to do with the feeling once it arrives.
James puts it in one of the most practical verses in Scripture: "let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath" (). Swift to hear. Slow to speak. Slow to wrath. Notice the order. Most of us do the exact opposite, swift to react, slow to actually listen, and lightning-fast to anger. James is describing a person who has put a gap between the feeling and the response. And in that gap is where you either build something or burn something down.
Real talk: You cannot unsend a message. You cannot un-say a word. The ten-second pause you skip is almost always cheaper than the apology you will owe later.
James adds the reason, and it is worth hearing: "the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God" (). Blowing up feels powerful in the moment. It feels like strength. But it almost never produces anything good, not in the situation, and not in you. The people you actually respect are rarely the ones who explode fastest. They are the ones who can feel the anger and still choose their response.
Being slow to anger is not weakness. It is one of the clearest signs of real strength. Anyone can react. It takes a strong person to pause.
Try this this week: When something makes you angry, do not reply for ten seconds, count them, put the phone down, or walk away. Respond after the heat, not during it.
Pray this: God, help me be slow to anger and slow to speak. Give me the strength to pause before I react, so I build people up instead of burning things down. Amen.
