Matthew 6:6
If prayer feels awkward, like you never have the right words and you are somehow doing it wrong — good news. Jesus specifically warned against the fancy, performed kind. He is not after your best words. He is after the real you.
A lot of people quietly give up on prayer because they think they are bad at it. They hear others pray in long, polished, impressive-sounding sentences and think, I could never do that, so they stop trying. If that is you, here is something that might set you free: Jesus actively warned against exactly that kind of praying. He told people not to make a show of it, and not to think God is impressed by a pile of fancy words.
His instructions are refreshingly simple. "When you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father" (). And then: "do not use vain repetitions... for your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him" (). Read that last part again. God already knows what you need before you say a word. So prayer is not you informing God or performing for Him. It is a private conversation with a Father who already knows you and wants to hear from you anyway.
Real talk: Prayer is not a talent show. There is no impressive version and no rubbish version. There is honest and dishonest, and God vastly prefers a clumsy honest prayer to a polished fake one.
This changes everything about how you can approach it. You do not need special words. You do not need to sound spiritual. You do not need to get the format right. You can talk to God the way you would talk to someone who loves you and already knows the whole situation, because that is exactly what is happening. "God, I'm confused." "I'm scared about tomorrow." "Thank You for today." "I don't even know what to say." All of those are real prayers. All of them land.
The reason to shut the door, Jesus says, is so it stays between you and God, not a show for anyone else. Stop trying to pray well. Just pray real. That is the only kind He ever asked for.
Try this this week: Pray one completely honest, unpolished prayer a day, no fancy words, just the real thing on your mind. Talk to God like He already knows, because He does.
Pray this: God, thank You that You are not after impressive words, just the real me. Help me stop performing and start talking to You honestly. Here I am, exactly as I am. Amen.
