The Armour That Every Believer Must Wear
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
"Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.",
Paul wrote Ephesians from prison. He was chained to a Roman soldier. Looking at the armour every day gave him the metaphor, but the reality behind the metaphor was not metaphorical. He was in a war that had already seen him beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, and imprisoned. He knew the battle was real. The armour was not a decorative concept. It was a survival requirement.
Insight "Wiles of the devil", the Greek is methodeia (from which we get "methodology"). The enemy operates methodically, systematically, and with patient cunning. He does not attack randomly. He observes, identifies vulnerabilities, and targets them strategically. The armour is not primarily for dramatic spiritual warfare encounters. It is for the daily, ordinary, methodical assault of discouragement, doubt, deception, and drift.
Each piece of armour is theological precision. The belt of truth holds everything together, without integrity of truth, the whole outfit falls apart. The breastplate of righteousness covers the vital organs, your moral life protects your heart. The shoes of the gospel of peace provide stability, you cannot be knocked off balance if your footing is sure. The shield of faith extinguishes missiles. The helmet of salvation guards your thought life. The sword is the only offensive weapon, the spoken, specific word of God.
Insight "Having done all, to stand." This is the posture of spiritual warfare: not frantic aggression, but stable, prepared, fully-armoured standing. The well-armoured believer is not knocked over by what comes. They simply stand. The enemy's strategy is to make you sit down, lie down, or run. The armour enables you to stand.
Check the armour today. Is anything missing? The piece you have left off is the piece the enemy will target first.
Prayer Lord, I put on the whole armour of God today, deliberately, piece by piece. Truth, righteousness, readiness, faith, salvation, the word. I take my stand against every scheme of the enemy. In the power of Your might, not mine, I will stand. Amen.
