Graveyard Faith

"And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord God, thou knowest.", Ezekiel 37:3

Ezekiel stood in a valley of dry bones, not fresh casualties, but long-dead bones, bleached by sun, scattered and disconnected. The question God asked him was diagnostic: "Son of man, can these bones live?" Notice what the question did not ask. It did not ask whether the bones could reorganise. It did not ask whether the situation was recoverable. It asked whether they could live.

Insight Ezekiel's answer was perfect: "O Lord God, thou knowest." Not "Yes, they can live", that would have been presumption. Not "No, they cannot", that would have been unbelief. But "O Lord God, thou knowest", that is faith without pretension, humility without defeat. It is the answer of someone who knows the limits of their own assessment and defers to the unlimited One.

Then God commanded what seemed absurd: "Prophesy upon these bones." Speaking to bones. Speaking to a dead situation. Speaking the word of God into what every natural analysis would classify as irreversible. And as Ezekiel spoke, the bones moved. The sinews came. The flesh appeared. But still, no life. Not until the breath came.

Insight The two-stage resurrection is significant. The prophetic word produced structure, bones connected, flesh covered. But the breath produced life. This is the role of the Holy Spirit in ministry: the word provides the framework; the Spirit provides the life. You can arrange the bones with your best preaching. Only the breath of God can make them live.

What is your valley of dry bones? What situation has been dead so long that it seems absurd to speak to it? Prophesy. Not from your faith in the bones, but from your faith in the God who breathes life into them.

Prayer Lord, give me Ezekiel's assignment. Let me prophesy to the dry bones in my family, in my church, in my city. Breathe on us. Where there is only structure without life, send the wind of Your Spirit. We want to live, exceeding great army. Amen.
