The Home Before the House of God

"One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)", 1 Timothy 3:4-5

Paul does not list public ministry success as a prerequisite for church leadership. He lists household leadership. The man who cannot navigate his own dinner table, who cannot lead his spouse with love, raise his children with wisdom, maintain his home with integrity, has not qualified for the pulpit, regardless of how well he preaches.

Insight The home is the original church. Before synagogues, before cathedrals, before Sunday morning services, God's first design for spiritual formation was a household gathered around a table, with parents teaching children, generations connected, faith transmitted in ordinary daily life. The local church is an extension of this, not a replacement for it.

Many ministers have made the fatal trade: trading the depth of home life for the breadth of public ministry. Their children grew up in the pews watching their father pour everything into other families while their own family received the leftovers. This is not sacrifice, it is an uncounted cost that eventually must be paid.

Insight "Ruleth well his own house" does not mean a perfect family. It means demonstrated, observable, consistent leadership that the household respects. It means your spouse can testify to your character without qualification. Your children can name the God you preach because they have watched you live with Him.

Let your home be the first evidence of your theology. The sermon that matters most to the people you come home to every night is the one lived out in how you treat them.

Prayer Lord, let my greatest sermon be the one preached in my own home. Teach me to lead Titilayo with the love Christ showed the church, to be present and purposeful in my household, and to build a home so rooted in You that it becomes a testimony the world cannot dispute. Amen.
