The Power of Praise in the Darkest Hour

"And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake.",

Paul and Silas were in the inner prison, not just jail, but maximum confinement. Their feet were in stocks. They had been beaten. They had done nothing wrong. And at midnight, at the very nadir of the human day, the hour of deepest darkness, they sang. Not quietly. The prisoners heard them.

Insight The midnight song is the most powerful form of praise because it requires the most faith. Anyone can praise in the morning. It costs nothing to worship at the concert when the lights are right. But to sing in the inner prison, feet in stocks, after being beaten unjustly, that is a song that moves the foundations of things.

There is a theology of midnight that the church rarely teaches: God is not more present in the daylight. He works at midnight. He moved in Egypt at midnight (). The bridegroom came at midnight (). The angel released Peter at midnight (). Midnight is one of God's favourite hours.

Insight "The foundations of the prison were shaken." The Greek word for "shaken" here is seio, seismic. An earthquake. Triggered by a midnight song. This is not metaphor. This is spiritual physics. When praise is offered in the most impossible circumstances, something fundamental shifts in the spiritual architecture of the situation.

What is your midnight? Where are the stocks? Where are the walls that seem permanent? Sing. The earthquake is closer than you think.

Prayer Lord, teach me the ministry of midnight. When I am in the inner prison, when conditions are worst and hope is farthest, let praise arise from the deepest place in me. I believe the midnight song can shake what nothing else can move. I will sing until the foundations shift. Amen.
