Treasure in Earthen Vessels

"But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.", 2 Corinthians 4:7

Paul was writing to a church that questioned whether he was a real apostle. His critics pointed to his weaknesses: he was physically unimpressive, his speech was "contemptible," he suffered constantly, and he did not project the triumphant authority they expected of a true apostle. His response is one of the most beautiful defences in all of literature: that is exactly the point.

Insight The treasure, the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ (v.6), is carried in earthen vessels on purpose. Clay jars. Fragile, ordinary, breakable containers. Not because God could not use stronger vessels, but because the contrast between the container and the contents is what reveals the source of the power. If the vessel were golden, people would admire the vessel.

The cracked places in your life are not disqualifications. They are translucent places, where the light gets out. The minister who has suffered depression and recovered carries something for the depressed that the minister who has never struggled cannot give. The pastor who has walked through divorce can sit with the divorcing with a quality of presence that theory cannot produce.

Insight Paul lists his afflictions in verses 8-9 and follows each one with the divine counteraction: pressed but not crushed; perplexed but not in despair; persecuted but not forsaken; struck down but not destroyed. The earthen vessel is broken, but it is not empty, and it is not finished.

Your brokenness is not the obstacle to your ministry. Honestly presented before God, it is one of your greatest qualifications.

Prayer Lord, I accept the vessel You chose. I no longer ask for a stronger container, I ask for more of the treasure. Let the cracks in my life become places of translucency rather than shame. Let Your glory shine through the very weaknesses I used to hide. Amen.
