From the Pit to the Palace

"But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.", Genesis 50:20

Joseph was sold by his brothers. He arrived in Egypt as a slave. He was falsely accused and imprisoned. He helped a man who forgot him for two years. At every turn, the story should have ended. Instead, it was being shaped, by a God who specialises in reversals so complete that they can only be explained one way: divine intent.

Insight "God meant it unto good." This is perhaps the most staggering verse in the Joseph narrative. Every human agent acted from evil, jealousy, lust, selfishness, forgetfulness. And God, working through, beneath, and despite every one of these acts, was threading a single purposeful narrative toward a conclusion that would save nations. The pit was part of the plan.

The word "meant" in Hebrew is chashab, to think, to plan, to weave. It is the craftsman's word, the artisan's word. God was weaving. The brothers were the unwitting shuttle. The pit, the slavery, the prison, these were not detours from God's plan. They were the threads of it.

Insight Joseph did not understand the design while he was in the pit. He wept when his brothers came the second time. The palace perspective on the pit only becomes clear after the elevation. While you are in your pit, you cannot fully see what God is weaving. This is where trust, naked, costly, unreasonable-looking trust, is the only available posture.

Someone reading this is in the pit. The betrayal is real. The injustice is real. God is also real, and He means it for good. The palace is further into the story. Keep going.

Prayer Lord, I choose to believe You are weaving even now. The pit does not look like a plan, but I have seen enough of Your story to trust the design I cannot yet see. What was meant for evil, I surrender to Your good. Take everything and make it count. Amen.
