Why Is My Church Not Growing Despite My Faithfulness?

Why Is My Church Not Growing Despite My Faithfulness?
Church Growth

Zechariah 4:10 · 1 Corinthians 3:6 · Mark 4:26-29

Understanding God's definition of growth, the hidden work of the Spirit, and how to stay faithful when the numbers stay small.

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

The honest cry

"I pray. I preach. I serve. I fast. But the numbers stay small and the same faces show up every Sunday. What am I doing wrong?" This is one of the loneliest questions in ministry, because it touches both our love for God and our fear of failure. Before we diagnose anything, we must reframe the very word growth.

God measures differently than men

"For who hath despised the day of small things?" (). Heaven does not despise small beginnings; only insecure hearts do. Jesus pastored twelve men for three years and one of them betrayed Him. By modern metrics His small group had an 8% failure rate, yet through those eleven the gospel reached the world. Numbers are not nothing, but they are not everything.

The division of labour in growth

Paul untangles the anxiety beautifully: "I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase" (). You are responsible for sowing and watering; God reserves the increase for Himself. When you take responsibility for what only God can do, you carry a weight He never assigned you. Faithfulness is your assignment; fruitfulness is His promise ().

Growth is mostly invisible

"So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; and should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how" (). Real growth, like a seed underground, happens out of sight long before it breaks the surface. Many ministers abandon the field one season before harvest because they confused invisible with absent.

Biblical example: Noah's 120-year "church plant"

Noah preached righteousness for roughly 120 years (; ) and his entire congregation at the end numbered eight, all family. By attendance, a catastrophic failure. By obedience, the salvation of the human race. Sometimes God measures a ministry by its faithfulness to a generation that would not listen.

Contemporary example: the depth-before-breadth pastor

Consider a pastor of forty who pours into a handful of men, teaching them to study, pray, give, and witness. Five years later three of them plant churches. His "small" church became a sending church. Deep roots produce wide branches, but in that order ().

Honest self-examination, without condemnation

Faithfulness does not exempt us from wisdom. Ask gently: Are we praying for souls or only managing services? Is the gospel preached with clarity? Are members equipped to invite and disciple ()? Is the congregation a warm family or a cold meeting? Sometimes God withholds increase until the wineskin is ready to hold it (). Examine, but never let examination curdle into self-hatred.

A word to the discouraged shepherd

If you are hungry for more of God in your ministry, seek His face more than His hand. A church on fire with God will eventually be noticed by a world that is cold. "And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved" (), the Lord added, after the church gave itself to His presence (). Tend the fire; God will gather the moths.

Reflection: If your church never grew larger, would you still believe your labour was worth it? Settle that, and you are free to be fruitful.
