The God of the Valley
Perseverance & Waiting1 Kings 20:28
God's Presence in Your Lowest Season
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
"And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the Lord, Because the Syrians have said, The Lord is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand.",
Syria had a theology of limitation. They believed Yahweh was a regional God, powerful in the hills, but limited in the valleys. They reorganised their army accordingly. The God of Israel had no problem demonstrating their error. He specifically identified their theological mistake and then defeated them on the very terrain they thought He could not access.
Insight Many of us carry a Syrian theology without realising it. We believe God is powerfully present in the Sunday morning, the mountain, the high place. But in the valley of depression, the valley of loss, the valley of business failure, the valley of unanswered prayer, we unconsciously assume His reach is limited. This is the Syrian error. God is God of the valley.
The valley is not the absence of God's territory. It is where He often does His most decisive work. The valley of dry bones in . The valley of the shadow of death in . The valley of Elah where David fought Goliath. God does not retreat when the terrain gets difficult. He advances.
Insight "Therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand." The word therefore is remarkable. Because of their wrong theology about God's limitation, God specifically chose that moment and that terrain to demonstrate it was wrong. Your valley is not where God is absent. It is where He will choose to display His power most unmistakably.
You are not in the wrong place. You are in the valley God has chosen to enter. He is God of your valley too.
Prayer Lord, correct my Syrian theology. Forgive me for believing Your power was limited to my mountain seasons. You are God of the hills and God of the valleys. Enter my valley with the same power You display on the mountaintop. Let Your victory here be the most undeniable of all. Amen.
