The Fire That Refines
Rest & Renewal1 Peter 1:7
Trials, Testing and the Transformation Only the Furnace Produces
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
"That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.",
Gold does not enter the furnace as a punishment. It enters as the necessary process for reaching its fullest value. The goldsmith's furnace is not an instrument of destruction, it is an instrument of purification. The fire consumes exactly what the gold does not need, and leaves exactly what it is. Peter applies this image to faith, and the comparison is not incidental. He says the trial of faith is "much more precious than gold."
Insight The dross that the fire consumes is not your faith. It is everything attached to your faith that is not faith, the mixture of self-reliance, pride, people-pleasing, theological performance, unexamined assumption. The pure metal that remains after the furnace is the genuine, tested, undeniable faith that has been proven in the fire. Nobody can argue with tested faith. It speaks for itself.
Three Hebrew men went into a furnace heated seven times hotter than normal (). They came out and "the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them" (v.27). The only thing the fire burned was the thing that bound them. They walked out freer than they entered. The furnace is not designed to consume you, it is designed to free you.
Insight "That the trial of your faith... might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ." The furnace is oriented toward a future moment. The gold is being refined now for a presentation that is coming. What is being processed in you today is being prepared for display on the day that matters most.
The fire is temporary. The refinement is permanent. The glory at the end is worth every degree of heat.
Prayer Lord, I submit to the furnace. Whatever is dross, consume it. Whatever is gold, refine it. I trust the goldsmith's eye, You know exactly the temperature required and exactly when to open the door. Let what remains after the fire be worth the glory of Your appearing. Amen.
