What does the Bible say about money, tithing, and giving?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
Scripture2 Corinthians 9:7
Money is one of Scripture's most frequent subjects, because Jesus knew it rivals God for the throne of our hearts. The Bible never calls money evil — it calls the love of it a root of all kinds of evil. The issue is mastery: money is a wonderful servant and a terrible god. Giving is woven through the whole Bible. In the Old Testament the tithe — a tenth — was the baseline of returning to God what was already His. The New Testament lifts the emphasis from a rule to the heart: give generously, purposefully, and cheerfully, as God has prospered you. For many, the tithe remains a helpful and challenging starting line, not a finish line. Underneath the percentages is a posture: everything you have is a trust from God, to be stewarded for His purposes and others' good. Generosity loosens money's grip on us and aligns our hearts with a giving God. Scripture: — “God loveth a cheerful giver.” Take this step: Decide on a regular, planned amount to give — prayerfully and generously — rather than giving from whatever is left over. Then watch how it reorders your heart.
Prayer
Father, thank You for meeting me in my questions. Give me wisdom to understand Your truth, faith to trust You where I cannot yet see, and grace to walk it out today. Anchor my heart in 2 Corinthians 9:7. In Jesus' name, amen.
