I was hurt by a church or a leader — how do I heal and move on?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScripturePsalm 147:3
First, let it be said plainly: your pain is real, and being wounded by people who claimed to represent God is a particularly deep kind of hurt. God takes the failures of shepherds seriously — far more seriously than you might expect. He is not asking you to pretend it did not happen. Healing usually involves several honest steps: grieving what happened rather than burying it, separating God from the people who misrepresented Him, and in time choosing to forgive — not to excuse the wrong, but to release its grip on you. Forgiveness is for your freedom, and it can coexist with wise boundaries. Resist the temptation to give up on the church altogether; that often hands the wound a second victory by isolating you from the very community that could help you heal. Re-enter slowly, with discernment, and let trustworthy believers help rebuild what was broken. Scripture: — “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” Take this step: Talk through the hurt with one safe, mature believer or a Christian counsellor rather than carrying it alone. When you are ready, take a small step back toward healthy community.
Prayer
Father, thank You for meeting me in my questions. Give me wisdom to understand Your truth, faith to trust You where I cannot yet see, and grace to walk it out today. Anchor my heart in Psalm 147:3. In Jesus' name, amen.
