I feel spiritually dry and far from God — how do I come back?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScriptureJames 4:8
Dry seasons come to almost every believer, and they are not necessarily a sign of failure. Sometimes they follow sin or neglect; sometimes they are simply seasons God allows to deepen our trust beyond our feelings. Either way, the way back is the same: return to Him simply and quickly, without waiting to feel worthy. Do not wait for the feelings to return before you act; feelings usually follow obedience rather than lead it. Go back to the basics that may have slipped — time in the Word, honest prayer, gathering with God's people, confession of anything that has come between you. Faithfulness in the dark is more precious to God than ease in the light. Above all, remember that your standing with God never rested on your feelings in the first place. He has not moved. The father in Jesus' parable ran to the returning son while he was still far off — and that is exactly how God receives you when you turn back. Scripture: — “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” Take this step: Pick one simple rhythm to restart today — ten minutes in a Gospel and an honest prayer — and rejoin your church community this week. Begin again; God already has.
Prayer
Father, thank You for meeting me in my questions. Give me wisdom to understand Your truth, faith to trust You where I cannot yet see, and grace to walk it out today. Anchor my heart in James 4:8. In Jesus' name, amen.
