How do I deal with regret over past decisions?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScripturePhilippians 3:13-14
It's completely normal, and deeply human, to experience regret over past decisions. We all make choices we wish we could undo, and the weight of those 'what ifs' can feel incredibly heavy. As believers, it's crucial to remember that dwelling in regret often keeps us from moving forward in the grace and purpose God has for us today. While we cannot change the past, we can absolutely change how the past impacts our present and shapes our future, especially through the lens of God's redemptive love.
The wonderful news of the Gospel is that God specializes in redemption. He doesn't just forgive our mistakes; He can actually use them for good. Think of King David, whose terrible choices had profound consequences, yet God restored him and used him powerfully. Your past decisions, even the ones you regret most deeply, do not define your identity in Christ. Instead, they can become testimonies of God's grace, lessons that build wisdom, and catalysts for greater empathy and reliance on Him.
Practically, dealing with regret involves several steps. Firstly, bring your regrets to God in prayer, confessing them and asking for His forgiveness and healing. Release the burden to Him. Secondly, forgive yourself. Just as God has forgiven you, extend that same grace to your own heart. Thirdly, learn from the experience. What insights can you gain? What steps can you take to avoid similar pitfalls in the future? This transforms regret into a powerful teacher rather than a paralyzing force.
Finally, focus on living intentionally for Christ today. The enemy loves to keep us bound by the past, but God's mercies are new every morning. Embrace the new beginning He offers you. By seeking His will, serving others, and walking in obedience, you actively participate in His plan to weave even your regretted decisions into a beautiful tapestry of grace and purpose. Let the past inform you, but never let it imprison you.
Prayer
Father, I bring my regrets before You now. Thank You for Your forgiveness and for the new mercies I receive each day. Help me to learn from my past, forgive myself, and walk forward in Your purpose and grace. In Jesus' name, amen.
