How do I grieve as a Christian?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
Scripture1 Thessalonians 4:13
Grieving as a Christian doesn't mean we don't feel pain or sadness; on the contrary, it means we can grieve with hope. The Bible acknowledges suffering and sorrow, and it gives us permission to feel the depth of our emotions. When we lose someone or experience a significant, painful change, it's natural to be overwhelmed. Leaning into God during these times, even when it feels hardest, allows Him to be our comforter. Our faith doesn't exempt us from hardship, but it does equip us for it.
One practical way to grieve is to express your feelings honestly and openly before God and trusted spiritual friends. Journaling, quiet prayer, or talking to a pastor or mentor can be powerful outlets. Don't feel pressured to "put on a brave face" if you're not genuinely feeling that way. God understands our weaknesses and our frailties. He is not surprised by our tears or our anger. He wants to meet us in those raw places and bring healing, often through the loving support of His body, the Church.
Allow yourself space and time for the grieving process. It's not a linear journey, and it looks different for everyone. There will be good days and difficult days, moments of clarity and moments of confusion. Remember that Jesus Himself wept at the tomb of Lazarus, showing us that grief is a human experience not to be suppressed but to be acknowledged in the presence of God. Our grieving is also a testimony to the depth of our love for what we've lost, a love that reflects God's own heart.
Ultimately, Christian grieving is anchored in the promise of resurrection and eternal life. While we mourn deeply in the present, we do not mourn as those who have no hope (). Our sorrow is real, but it is tempered by the certainty of God's perfect plan and His ultimate triumph over death. This profound hope, rooted in Christ, doesn't erase the pain, but it provides a steadfast foundation upon which we can rebuild, knowing that God walks with us through every step of this difficult journey.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for understanding my pain and for being my comfort in sorrow. Help me to grieve honestly and deeply, always anchored in Your unfailing hope. Guide me through this process, Lord, and heal my hurting heart. In Jesus' name, amen.
