How do I keep my joy when life is hard?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Psalm 16:11

It's completely normal to feel your joy challenged when life throws difficult circumstances your way. Everyone, from the early saints to believers today, experiences seasons of hardship and sorrow. The key to maintaining joy isn't necessarily a feeling of effervescent happiness in the midst of trials, but a deep-seated conviction and trust in God's unwavering character and His ultimate plan. This joy is rooted in something far more profound than our immediate circumstances; it's anchored in the eternal truth of Christ's love and redemption, which no earthly trouble can diminish.

One powerful way to cultivate this enduring joy is by intentionally shifting your focus from your problems to God's promises. When difficulties flood your mind, redirect your thoughts to what God has already done for you and what He has committed to do. Recall specific instances of His faithfulness in your past, meditate on Scriptures that speak of His provision and comfort, and remind yourself of the future hope we have in Christ. This spiritual discipline helps recalibrate your perspective, allowing you to see your challenges through the lens of God's overarching goodness, which can transform your outlook.

Community also plays a vital role in sustaining joy during tough times. Don't isolate yourself when you're hurting; instead, lean into your spiritual family. Share your struggles with trusted Christian friends or your small group, allowing them to pray for you, encourage you, and remind you of God's presence. Sometimes, others can see God's hand in our lives more clearly than we can when we’re in the thick of a trial. Their support and fellowship provide strength and a tangible expression of God's love, reminding us that we are not alone in our journey.

Finally, remember that joy is not the absence of pain, but the presence of God in the midst of it. Even in the valley of the shadow of death, the psalmist declared that God was with him. Embrace the spiritual practice of gratitude, even for the smallest blessings amidst the storm. Thanking God for His steadfastness, His grace, and the lessons learned through hardship can surprisingly unlock a reservoir of joy you didn't know you had. This type of joy is a testimony to the world, demonstrating the power of Christ's love to conquer even the deepest sorrows.

Prayer

Dear Lord, help me to fix my eyes on You and Your unchanging truth when life's struggles threaten to steal my joy. Grant me the grace to remember Your faithfulness and find peace in Your presence. In Jesus' name, amen.
