How do I find rest in a busy season?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Matthew 11:28-30

Navigating a busy season can feel like being caught in a whirlwind, leaving us feeling depleted and overwhelmed. It's crucial to remember that true rest isn't merely the absence of activity, but a reorientation of our hearts towards Christ. This means intentionally carving out moments to commune with Him, even amidst the chaos. Think of it not as another task to add to your schedule, but as the essential fuel that empowers you to face your responsibilities with a renewed spirit and Christ's peace.

One practical way to find this rest is by intentionally practicing Sabbath, even in miniature ways if a full day isn't feasible. This could mean dedicating an hour to quiet Bible reading and prayer, taking a technology break, or engaging in an activity that genuinely refreshes your soul and draws you closer to God, rather than draining you further. The goal is to create space for spiritual replenishment, trusting that God will honor your efforts to prioritize Him above the pressing demands of the day.

Consider also the wisdom of delegation and setting healthy boundaries. While some seasons are undoubtedly demanding, it's worth examining if every "busy" task truly requires your personal attention. Learning to say no gracefully, or asking for help from your community, is not a sign of weakness but of wisdom. It reflects a recognition that you are not self-sufficient and that God often works through others to provide the very support and rest you need.

Ultimately, finding rest in a busy season is an act of faith. It's trusting that God is sovereign over your schedule and that He provides the grace and strength for each moment. When you feel overwhelmed, intentionally cast your anxieties upon Him, knowing He cares for you (). His yoke is easy and His burden is light, and in His presence, you will always find the truest and most enduring rest, regardless of your external circumstances.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I come to You today, seeking Your peace and rest amidst the demands of life. Help me to surrender my busy schedule to You and trust in Your provision. Fill me with Your strength and calm my anxious heart. In Jesus' name, amen.
