What does the Bible say about laziness?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Proverbs 6:6

The Bible consistently portrays laziness, often termed slothfulness, as a characteristic to be avoided by believers. Proverbs, in particular, frequently highlights the negative consequences of idleness, contrasting it with the rewards of diligence. For instance, it warns that "The hand of the diligent will rule, but the slothful will be put to forced labor" (). This isn't just about financial success, but about stewardship of the gifts and opportunities God provides us. We are called to be active participants in His kingdom and responsible in our daily lives.

More than a mere lack of activity, biblical laziness often implies an unwillingness to take responsibility, to work, or to contribute to the common good. It can stem from a desire for comfort over duty, leading to neglected responsibilities and missed opportunities. The New Testament similarly encourages hard work and self-sufficiency, reminding us that "If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat" (). This teaching underscores a foundational principle: we are designed for purposeful activity and given the privilege to labor and create.

God Himself is a diligent worker, continually active in sustaining and governing His creation. As His image-bearers, we are called to reflect His industrious nature in our own lives, whether in our vocations, our families, or our service to the church. This doesn't mean burnout or constant striving, but a consistent, responsible effort in the areas God has placed us. Our work, when done unto the Lord, becomes an act of worship and a means of honoring Him with our time and talents.

Therefore, embracing diligence and rejecting slothfulness is a spiritual discipline. It involves a willingness to exert effort, a commitment to faithfully manage our responsibilities, and a desire to be productive for God's glory. When we cultivate a diligent spirit, we not only avoid the pitfalls of laziness but also open ourselves up to experiencing the fruitfulness and blessings that come from faithful stewardship and purposeful living, reflecting Christ in all we do.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, please strengthen me to overcome any tendencies toward laziness and to embrace diligence in all my tasks. Help me to glorify You through my consistent effort and faithful stewardship of the gifts You have given me. In Jesus' name, amen.
