How do I lead as a Christian in a secular workplace?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Colossians 3:23-24

Leading as a Christian in a secular workplace might seem like a tricky balance, but it's really about living out your faith authentically in every interaction. It's not about preaching or pushing your beliefs on others, but rather demonstrating the character of Christ through your actions, attitude, and work ethic. Think of yourself as a walking epistle, a living letter of Christ that your colleagues can read daily. Your commitment to excellence, integrity, and serving others can speak volumes about the God you serve without you having to say a single word.

One of the most powerful ways to lead is by example. This means excelling in your responsibilities, showing up with a positive and humble spirit, and consistently producing high-quality work. When you're known for your diligence and reliability, you earn respect and trust, which are foundational for influence. Moreover, Christian leadership in the workplace often involves being a peace-maker, a problem-solver who approaches challenges with wisdom and grace, and someone who uplifts and encourages their team members. This stands in stark contrast to the often competitive and self-serving culture of many secular environments.

Developing strong relational intelligence is also key. Strive to genuinely care for your colleagues, understanding their perspectives, showing empathy, and being a good listener. Offer support when they’re struggling and celebrate their successes. These relational investments build bridges and create opportunities for organic, faith-filled conversations when appropriate. When your colleagues see that you consistently operate with kindness, patience, and self-control, they become naturally curious about the source of your distinct way of living and leading.

Ultimately, leading as a Christian means remembering that your primary audience is God, and you are called to glorify Him in all that you do. This mindset frees you from the need for worldly affirmation and empowers you to lead with courage, conviction, and compassion, even when it's challenging or unpopular. By embodying biblical principles like justice, mercy, and humility in your daily work, you can be a light in your workplace, fostering an environment that reflects the transformative power of Christ.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, please grant me wisdom and strength to glorify You in my workplace today. Help me to lead with integrity, humility, and love, reflecting Your character in every interaction. In Jesus' name, amen.
