Is ambition wrong for a Christian?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScriptureColossians 3:23-24
Ambition in itself isn't inherently wrong for a Christian. In fact, the Bible often commends diligence and purpose. The key lies in the source and object of our ambition. Is it rooted in a desire for God's glory and the advancement of His kingdom, or is it solely focused on personal gain, recognition, and worldly success? When our ambition aligns with God's will and is pursued with integrity and humility, it can be a powerful force for good, allowing us to use the gifts and talents He's given us to serve others and make a meaningful impact. We are called to be fruitful, which implies purposeful action shaped by our faith.
However, unchecked ambition can quickly become a snare, leading to pride, covetousness, and a willingness to compromise our values. When our pursuit of success overshadows our commitment to Christ, our relationships, or our spiritual well-being, it has strayed into dangerous territory. The New Testament warns about the deceitfulness of riches and the love of money, which can pull our hearts away from God. True fulfillment and lasting impact come not from climbing the corporate ladder or accumulating wealth, but from living a life devoted to Christ and His purposes, whatever our calling may be. It's about seeking first His kingdom.
Think of biblical figures like Nehemiah, whose ambition to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem stemmed from a deep love for God and his people, or the Apostle Paul, whose fervent desire was to spread the Gospel across the Roman world. Their ambitions were not self-serving but God-centered, enabling them to accomplish great things for the Lord. They pursued their callings with zeal and dedication, demonstrating that a godly ambition is a powerful tool for ministry and service. Our desires, when consecrated to God, become instruments in His hands, allowing us to contribute to His grand redemptive plan for humanity.
Therefore, as young believers, we are encouraged to have ambitions, but to submit them constantly to the Lordship of Christ. Ask yourself: "Does this ambition draw me closer to God or further away? Does it serve others or just myself? Is it congruent with biblical principles?" By prayerfully discerning and aligning our aspirations with God's Word and His Spirit, we can cultivate a holy ambition that glorifies Him and brings true, lasting satisfaction, knowing that our labor in the Lord is never in vain. We can be driven and passionate, but always with heaven's perspective guiding our steps.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to examine my heart and ensure my ambitions are rooted in Your will and designed to bring You glory. Guide my desires so that I may labor for Your kingdom and serve others with integrity and love. In Jesus' name, amen.
