How do I balance work and rest?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Exodus 20:8-10

Balancing work and rest is a fundamental rhythm God Himself established for us, right from creation. We see in Genesis that after His creative work, God rested, setting a divine example for humanity. This isn't just about physical recuperation, but also about spiritual renewal and stepping back to acknowledge God's sovereignty over our efforts. When we prioritize rest, we're not just being lazy; we're trusting that God is able to sustain us and bless our work even when we're not constantly striving.

Our culture often applauds relentless work and burnout, but God's wisdom calls us to a different path. He understands our limitations and the need for Sabbath, a dedicated time for ceasing from labor and refocusing on Him. This doesn't mean neglecting our responsibilities, but rather wisely stewarding our time and energy, recognizing that our productivity isn't solely dependent on our endless exertion. It’s about building in regular pauses, whether daily, weekly, or seasonally, to recharge our bodies, minds, and spirits.

Practically, this might look like scheduling specific breaks during your workday, making sure to fully disengage from work on your days off, or even taking regular sabbaticals if your work allows. It also involves setting healthy boundaries, learning to say “no” when necessary, and not letting guilt drive you into overworking. Remember that true rest isn't idleness; it’s an active choice to trust God with your provision and progress, allowing Him to refresh you so you can serve Him and others more effectively.

Ultimately, balancing work and rest is an ongoing discipleship journey. It's about finding that sweet spot where you're diligently using your gifts for God's glory while also honoring your human need for replenishment. When we learn to rest well, we often find ourselves more fruitful in our work, exhibiting greater patience, clarity, and joy. Trust that God has designed you for this rhythm, and He will guide you in finding it.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for the gift of both work and rest. Please help me to wisely discern the balance You intend for my life, trusting You with my efforts and my need for replenishment. Guide me to honor Your design for rest, so I may serve You wholeheartedly. In Jesus' name, amen.
