How do I get out of debt biblically?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Proverbs 22:7

Financial debt can feel like a heavy burden, but the Bible offers profound wisdom for navigating and overcoming it. The first step involves honest self-assessment and repentance where necessary. Understanding that debt can hinder our ability to generously serve God and others, as well as cause undue stress, often provides the motivation needed to make real changes. It's about recognizing that our resources are ultimately God's, and we are stewards called to manage them responsibly, seeking His wisdom in every financial decision.

Practically, getting out of debt biblically involves careful budgeting and commitment. reminds us that "the borrower is servant to the lender," which highlights the importance of financial freedom. Begin by creating a detailed budget, tracking every dollar in and out. Identify areas where you can cut expenses, even temporarily, to free up more funds. The "debt snowball" or "debt avalanche" methods can be highly effective, focusing on one debt at a time while making minimum payments on others, accelerating your progress and building momentum.

This journey also requires patience and perseverance. It's rarely an overnight process. Seek counsel from financially sound believers and accountability partners who can encourage you and offer practical advice. Consider increasing your income through additional work or utilizing skills God has given you, dedicating a portion of this extra income specifically to debt reduction. This process isn't just about numbers; it's about cultivating discipline, trust in God's provision, and seeking alignment with His principles for our lives.

Ultimately, freedom from debt is a liberation that allows us to live with greater peace and to give more freely to God's kingdom. As you work towards this goal, remember to consistently pray for wisdom, discipline, and divine guidance. Trust that God cares about every aspect of your life, including your finances, and desires for you to live in freedom and abundance, not just financially, but holistically. His grace is sufficient to help you navigate this path successfully.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I ask for Your wisdom and discipline as I seek to manage my finances according to Your will and overcome debt. Guide my steps and provide for my needs, that I may honor You with all my resources. In Jesus' name, amen.
