How much should I give and to whom?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

2 Corinthians 9:7

That's a great question, and it shows a heart desiring to honor God with your resources! When considering how much to give, the Bible doesn't prescribe a strict percentage like a flat tax, but it does establish the principle of tithing, which is ten percent. This was a foundational practice in the Old Testament, representing the firstfruits of one's increase. For believers today, many see the tithe as a baseline, a starting point for generous giving, recognizing that all we have ultimately belongs to God.

Beyond the tithe, the New Testament encourages cheerful, proportionate, and sacrificial giving, as each one purposes in their heart (). This means prayerfully considering your income, expenses, and what you can give without compulsion or regret. It’s not about legalism, but about a joyful response to God's immense generosity towards us. Some may feel led to give more than ten percent, while others, in specific seasons of hardship, may prayerfully give what they can, knowing God values the heart behind the gift.

As for "to whom," your primary giving should be to your local church. The church is God's instrument for carrying out His work in the world, teaching the Word, ministering to the needy, and spreading the Gospel. Supporting your church helps fund its ministries, staff, and outreach efforts, allowing it to be a light in your community and beyond. This is where you are fed spiritually, discipled, and have a community of faith, and supporting it financially is an act of stewardship and partnership.

Additionally, you can prayerfully consider supporting other ministries and organizations that align with biblical principles and are doing good work for the Kingdom. This could include missions organizations, parachurch ministries, or charities that care for the poor, orphans, and widows. Always exercise discernment, researching organizations to ensure they are financially responsible and doctrinally sound. Ultimately, giving is an act of worship, a tangible expression of trust in God's provision and love for His kingdom.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your abundant provision in my life. Help me to be a wise and cheerful steward of the resources You entrust to me, giving generously with a joyful heart. Guide me in knowing how much to give and to whom, that my giving may honor You and advance Your Kingdom. In Jesus' name, amen.
