Is it a sin to be rich?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

1 Timothy 6:10

The Bible doesn't condemn wealth itself, but rather the love of money and the dangers that can come with riches. Scripture celebrates figures like Abraham and Job, who were tremendously wealthy and yet walked in deep faith and obedience to God. The issue isn't possessing wealth, but what possesses our heart: is it God, or is it money and all that it can buy? Our ultimate treasure should always be Christ, and our resources, whether few or many, are to be stewarded for His glory.

The real challenge for the rich, as Jesus pointed out to the rich young ruler, is often their attachment to their possessions. It's difficult to serve two masters, and wealth can easily become an idol, pulling our affection and trust away from God. This isn't about the amount in one's bank account, but the posture of one's heart. If we trust in our riches more than in God, or if we use wealth selfishly, ignoring the needs of others, then it becomes a spiritual stumbling block.

God can certainly bless people with abundance, and He often does, not just for their own comfort but so they can be a blessing to others. Generosity, humility, and a deep reliance on God are key for anyone with significant resources. When wealth is viewed as a tool for God's kingdom and a means to bless others and advance His purposes, it can be a mighty force for good. The focus shifts from accumulation to distribution, from personal gain to communal well-being and kingdom impact.

Ultimately, whether one is rich or poor, the call is the same: to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. If wealth enables us to fulfill these commands more effectively, by supporting ministries, helping the needy, or living a life of faithful stewardship, then it is a blessing. If it hinders us, causing us to become proud, greedy, or detached from God, then it becomes a snare. The heart's condition, not the bank balance, is what God truly examines.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to steward all possessions You entrust to me with wisdom and generosity. Guide my heart to always seek You above any earthly treasure. In Jesus' name, amen.
