How do I steward money as a Christian?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

1 Chronicles 29:14

Stewarding money as a Christian begins with a fundamental shift in perspective: recognizing that all we have, including our finances, ultimately belongs to God. We are merely managers, called to wisely oversee the resources He has entrusted to us for His glory and the advancement of His kingdom. This understanding frees us from the anxiety of ownership and encourages us to approach our financial decisions with a heart of gratitude, generosity, and responsibility. It's not about how much we have, but how faithfully we manage what we've been given.

Practically, this stewardship involves several key areas. Firstly, prioritizing giving, often referred to as tithing, is a foundational act of worship and trust in God's provision. Beyond tithing, we are called to be generous and compassionate, using our resources to meet the needs of others, support mission, and spread the Gospel. This isn't just about giving away money, but also about cultivating a spirit of open-handedness that reflects God's own generous nature. It challenges consumerism and encourages a focus on eternal values over temporal possessions.

Secondly, responsible stewardship includes diligent saving and wise spending. This means living within our means, avoiding unnecessary debt, and planning for the future, not out of fear, but out of prudence and foresight. Budgeting becomes a spiritual discipline, allowing us to allocate resources intentionally for our needs, obligations, and charitable giving. It's about being good managers of what God has provided, ensuring that we are not wasteful or extravagant, but rather thoughtful and strategic in our financial choices.

Finally, Christian money stewardship extends to how we earn our money. We are called to pursue work with integrity, diligence, and a commitment to excellence, seeing our workplace as a sphere where we can honor God. This means earning honestly, fairly, and in a way that aligns with biblical principles. Ultimately, stewarding money as a Christian is a holistic discipleship journey, reflecting our trust in God's sovereignty and our desire to use every aspect of our lives, including our finances, for His kingdom purposes.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to see all my resources as gifts from You and to manage them according to Your will. Grant me wisdom to be a faithful steward, living generously and responsibly for Your glory. In Jesus' name, amen.
