How do I raise children who love Jesus?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScriptureProverbs 22:6
Raising children to love Jesus is primarily about discipleship, not just instruction. It begins with your own authentic faith walk; children are keen observers, and they will catch much more than they are taught. Live out your love for God daily in how you speak, how you serve, how you forgive, and how you prioritize your time. Let them see your joy in Christ, your reliance on Him, and your passion for His word. This lived example creates a fertile ground for their own faith to blossom naturally.
Intentional spiritual practices within the home are also crucial. Make family devotions a regular rhythm, even if it's just a few minutes each day reading a Bible story, discussing a Scripture, or praying together. Teach them the power of prayer, not just as a formality, but as a genuine conversation with their heavenly Father. Encourage questions about faith, and be ready to explore those questions with open hearts and minds, admitting when you don't know an answer and seeking it together. These shared moments build a foundation of spiritual understanding.
Equally important is creating an environment where children feel secure, loved, and valued, reflecting the Father's heart. Correct with grace and teach consequences with compassion, always pointing them back to God's unfailing love and repentance. Help them see God in everyday moments, in the beauty of creation, in acts of kindness, and in the challenges that strengthen their character. Foster a spirit of service and generosity, showing them how to love their neighbor and share the good news of Jesus with others through their actions.
Ultimately, remember that salvation is a work of the Holy Spirit, not something you can force or guarantee. Your role is to plant seeds, water them with prayer and truth, and trust God for the growth. Continue to pray fervently for your children's hearts, surrendering them into the Lord's hands. Provide a loving, Christ-centered home, speak truth into their lives, and model a genuine pursuit of God. The Lord is faithful and delights in bringing His children to Himself.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the precious gift of children. Please guide me as I seek to raise them in Your truth and love, that they may know and adore You with all their hearts. In Jesus' name, amen.
