How do I be a godly wife?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScriptureProverbs 31:10-31
Being a godly wife is less about adhering to a rigid checklist and more about cultivating a heart surrendered to Christ. It begins with seeking to honor God in all your interactions, thoughts, and attitudes within your marriage. This means prioritizing your relationship with the Lord daily through prayer and His Word, allowing His truth to shape your understanding of love, respect, and partnership. When your identity is firmly rooted in Him, you're better equipped to love your husband selflessly, even when it's challenging, reflecting God's unconditional love.
Practically, this looks like choosing to speak words that build up and encourage your husband, rather than tear down or criticize. It involves actively praying for him, his responsibilities, and his walk with God. A godly wife seeks to be a helper, a supporter, and a trusted companion, looking for ways to lighten his burdens and celebrate his successes. This isn't about being subservient without thought, but about recognizing the unique design God has for marriage, where both partners contribute to a flourishing, Christ-centered home.
Furthermore, embodying godliness in marriage means extending grace and forgiveness freely, just as Christ has extended it to us. No marriage is perfect, and there will be times of misunderstanding, hurt, or disagreement. In these moments, a godly wife strives for reconciliation, humility, and understanding, willing to admit her own faults and extend compassion. It's about letting go of pride and embracing a spirit of gentleness and patience, trusting that God is at work in both of you.
Ultimately, a godly wife reflects the character of Christ. She is marked by love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, as described in . This isn't achieved through human effort alone, but by allowing the Holy Spirit to transform her from the inside out. As you continue to grow in your relationship with God, He will empower you to be the wife He has called you to be, a blessing to your husband and a testament to His grace.
Prayer
Dear Lord, please guide me each day to understand and live out Your will for my marriage. Help me to be a wife who honors You in all I do, loving and supporting my husband with grace and wisdom. Transform my heart to reflect Your love and character. In Jesus' name, amen.
