How do I handle conflict in marriage biblically?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScriptureColossians 3:12-14
Navigating conflict in marriage biblically begins with humility and a commitment to unity. The Bible urges us to put off pride and self-righteousness, and instead, "Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do" (). This means approaching disagreements with a posture of seeking to understand your spouse's heart and perspective, rather than just defending your own position, fostering an environment where both feel heard and valued.
Effective biblical communication during conflict involves listening more than speaking, and when you do speak, doing so with grace and love. "Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers" (). This counsel is especially vital within marriage. Avoid harsh words, accusations, or bringing up past offenses. Instead, focus on the present issue, express your feelings and needs respectfully, and seek solutions together that honor both of you and, most importantly, honor God's design for your covenant.
Forgiveness is the cornerstone of resolving conflict and maintaining intimacy. Just as Christ has forgiven us, we are called to extend that same boundless grace to our spouses. "And above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection" (). Holding onto grudges or resentment creates distance and bitterness. True forgiveness means choosing to release the offense, trusting God to work in both your hearts, and actively moving forward in renewed love and commitment. It's a daily choice that strengthens the marital bond.
Ultimately, handling conflict biblically means prioritizing your spouse and your marriage above victory in an argument. Remember that you are on the same team, united by God. Seek God's wisdom through prayer, both individually and together, inviting the Holy Spirit to guide your conversations and soften your hearts. A marriage centered on Christ will find that even conflict can be an opportunity for deeper understanding, growth, and a more profound reflection of God's patient, steadfast love.
