How do I honour parents who wounded me?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Ephesians 6:2-3

This is a deeply personal and challenging question, and it's understandable to feel conflicted when considering honor for those who have caused pain. The command to honor parents in Scripture is foundational, but it doesn't mean condoning sin or remaining in an abusive situation. Instead, honoring broken parents often involves a posture of grace, forgiveness, and establishing healthy boundaries. It's about recognizing their position and the limitations of their humanity, entrusting to God the justice and healing that only He can perfectly provide, and choosing a response that reflects Christ's character, even when it's incredibly difficult.

Honoring God in this situation is paramount. Our ultimate allegiance is to Him, and He calls us to extend love and seek reconciliation where possible, without sacrificing our well-being or perpetuating cycles of harm. Practically, this might mean forgiving past offenses, not for their sake, but for your own healing and freedom. It could also involve communicating boundaries clearly and respectfully, protecting your emotional and spiritual space, and perhaps seeking counsel from trusted spiritual mentors or a Christian therapist to navigate these complex dynamics with wisdom and grace.

Remember, honoring does not equate to blind obedience, nor does it require you to pretend that the wounds do not exist. It's about respecting the parental role God ordained, even if the individuals in that role failed profoundly. This respect can manifest as praying for them, refraining from speaking ill of them, and if safe and appropriate, maintaining a level of connection that doesn't jeopardize your spiritual or emotional health. It's a journey of faith, trusting God to work in their lives and yours, even when the path ahead seems unclear.

Ultimately, the Lord understands your pain and the difficulty of this command. He offers strength, comfort, and wisdom to navigate these relationships. Focus on what is within your control: your responses, your heart's posture, and your commitment to walk in His ways. As you seek to honor God first, He will guide you in how to best honor your parents, even amidst deep wounds, allowing His grace to be sufficient in your weakness.

Prayer

Lord, I pray for wisdom and grace to navigate the challenging waters of honoring my parents, especially when I carry the burden of past wounds. Help me to forgive, to set healthy boundaries, and to respond in a way that honors You above all else. In Jesus' name, amen.
