How do I overcome pride in my heart?

Praise God for your desire to tackle pride, as it's a subtle but powerful adversary to our spiritual growth and intimacy with God. Pride often masquerades as self-reliance, confidence, or even humility, making it tricky to pinpoint. The first step in overcoming it is honest introspection, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal areas where you might be operating out of a sense of superiority, self-sufficiency, or a need for human glory over God's glory. This self-examination, guided by Scripture, allows us to see pride for what it truly is: an exaltation of self above God and others.

True humility, in contrast to pride, isn't thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less, and thinking more of God and others. It begins by recognizing that every good and perfect gift comes from above, from our gracious Father (James 1:17). We have nothing that we did not receive. Embracing this truth liberates us from the burden of having to prove ourselves or earn our worth. Instead, we can rest in God's unconditional love and His perfect plan for our lives, understanding that our value is derived from being His beloved child, not from our achievements or perceived strengths.

Practically, cultivate a spirit of gratitude and service. Regularly thank God for His blessings, your talents, and even your challenges, recognizing that all things work together for good to those who love Him. Look for opportunities to serve others without seeking recognition or reward. This act of giving your time, resources, or gifts selflessly, as Jesus did, shifts your focus from 'me' to 'we' and ultimately to 'Him'. Serving others helps dismantle the self-centered foundation upon which pride is built, replacing it with the selfless love of Christ.

Finally, immerse yourself in God's Word and prayer. The Bible consistently brings us back to God's sovereignty and our dependence on Him. When we truly grasp His majesty and our place in His grand design, pride naturally diminishes. In prayer, confess any prideful thoughts or actions, asking God for a humble and teachable spirit. Continually yield your will to His, trusting that He knows what is best and that true exaltation comes from Him, in His timing, and for His glory. "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30) should be our constant meditation.
