How do I handle sexual sin and pornography?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
Scripture1 Corinthians 10:13
Sexual sin and pornography can feel like overwhelming burdens, but please know that you are not alone in this struggle, and there is immense hope and freedom available in Christ. The first step is acknowledging the sin, not just as a mistake, but as something that grieates God and harms your own soul. Confession to God is vital, laying it all bare before Him, trusting in His perfect love and forgiveness, which are freely given through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. This is not about earning His favor, but about receiving His cleansing and restoration.
The next crucial step is to actively pursue repentance, which means turning away from the sin and turning towards God. This involves practical changes, such as identifying triggers and removing anything that facilitates access to pornography or temptation. It might mean installing accountability software, setting boundaries with technology, or even changing routines and environments. Repentance is not a one-time event, but a daily commitment to walk in the Spirit, allowing Him to transform your desires and renew your mind, making you more like Christ.
Building strong, godly relationships is also incredibly important. Find a trusted, mature Christian mentor or friend with whom you can be transparent and accountable. Sharing your struggles with another believer can provide immense support, prayer, and encouragement, helping you fight the battle when you feel weak. Isolation often fuels sin, so intentionally connect with a community that upholds biblical values and can speak truth and grace into your life, reminding you of your identity in Christ.
Finally, immerse yourself in God's Word and prayer. The Bible is a powerful weapon against temptation, renewing your mind and filling it with truth. Regular prayer keeps you connected to the source of all strength and purity. Remember that Jesus has already won the victory over sin, and through His power, you can experience increasing freedom. Trust in His grace, lean on His strength, and keep fighting the good fight, knowing that He is working all things for your good and His glory.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I confess my struggles and ask for Your forgiveness and strength to overcome temptation. Please empower me by Your Holy Spirit to walk in purity and righteousness. In Jesus' name, amen.
