How do I know if I have a calling on my life?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Ephesians 2:10

Discernment of God's calling often begins with a deep, honest look at your desires, gifts, and the burdens you carry for the world. What breaks your heart? What problems do you naturally gravitate towards solving? What activities make you lose track of time because you're so engrossed and energized by them? These aren't just random personal preferences; often, they are signposts God has placed within you, pointing towards the unique ways He intends to use you to build His Kingdom and bless others. Recognizing these internal nudges is a significant first step, as God often works through our natural inclinations when they're surrendered to Him.

Simultaneously, observe how God has graced you with specific talents and abilities. Have others affirmed particular gifts in you, whether it's teaching, compassion, organization, hospitality, or a knack for creative expression? These divinely bestowed capabilities are not for your sole benefit; they are tools given to serve His purposes. As you use your gifts to bless those around you, pay attention to the sense of fulfillment and fruitfulness that follows. This affirmation, both from within yourself and from the community, provides external confirmation that you are operating in areas God has uniquely equipped you for.

Your calling isn't always a singular, dramatic event, but often a unfolding journey. Engage with your local church community, seeking opportunities to serve and learn. As you serve, new doors may open, and you might discover needs you never knew existed, for which you are uniquely suited. Counsel from wise, godly mentors and pastors can also be invaluable, as they can offer objective perspectives and help you interpret God's leading. Don't underestimate the power of simply showing up and being available for God to use you where you are right now.

Ultimately, knowing your calling is less about finding a specific job title and more about living in alignment with God's overarching purpose for all believers: to love Him, love others, and make disciples. Your specific calling will fit within this larger framework. It's a continuous process of walking intimately with Christ, listening to His Spirit, studying His Word, and being obedient to the next step He reveals. Trust that as you seek Him wholeheartedly, He will illuminate the path you are to take, one step at a time.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I pray for clarity and wisdom as I seek to understand Your unique calling for my life. Help me to recognize the desires, gifts, and opportunities You place before me, and embolden me to walk in obedience. Guide me by Your Holy Spirit to serve You faithfully and make an impact for Your Kingdom. In Jesus' name, amen.
