How do I develop a consistent quiet time?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScripturePsalm 119:105
Developing a consistent quiet time can feel like a spiritual Everest, but the journey begins with a single, intentional step. Start by finding a specific, consistent time and a quiet place where you can be undisturbed. Consistency doesn't mean perfection from day one; it means showing up even when you don't feel like it. Think of it as a daily appointment with the King of kings, an intimate time to draw near to Him and be refreshed in His presence. It's less about the clock and more about the connection.
Next, keep it simple and sustainable. Don't feel pressured to read five chapters of the Bible, journal extensively, and pray for an hour right away. A good start might be reading one psalm or a short New Testament passage, meditating on a single verse, and offering a heartfelt prayer. As you consistently make this time a priority, your desire and capacity for deeper engagement will naturally grow. The goal is spiritual nourishment, not a checklist. Let the Holy Spirit guide your time and make it a sweet communion, not a rigid duty.
To overcome common hurdles like distractions or drowsiness, prepare your heart and mind beforehand. Lay out your Bible, journal, or whatever resources you use the night before. Consider having a warm drink if it helps you focus, and if possible, choose a time of day when you are most alert. Remember, spiritual disciplines are not about earning God's love, but about opening ourselves to receive more of it. It's a gracious invitation from a loving Father who longs to spend time with His children, not a performance for Him.
Finally, remember that grace covers your inconsistencies. There will be days when life happens, and your quiet time gets shortened or even missed. Don't let guilt derail your progress. Simply pick up where you left off the next day with a renewed spirit. God's mercies are new every morning, and His faithfulness is constant. This journey is about building a loving relationship with Him, and every moment spent in His presence, no matter how brief, strengthens that bond and transforms your heart.
Prayer
Lord, I pray for discipline and desire to consistently meet with You each day. Help me to prioritize this sacred time and quiet my heart to hear Your voice, finding refreshment and guidance in Your presence. In Jesus' name, amen.
