Can Christians experience mental illness?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScripturePsalm 34:18
Yes, absolutely. Being a Christian does not exempt someone from experiencing mental illness. Our faith is deeply spiritual, but we are also physical beings living in a fallen world, and our brains are part of that physical make-up. Just as a Christian can experience a physical illness like diabetes or cancer, they can also experience mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. These are medical conditions, not signs of spiritual weakness or lack of faith.
It's crucial to remember that our identity in Christ remains unshaken despite any struggles we face, including those with mental health. God does not condemn us for having an illness; instead, He offers comfort, strength, and healing, often through both spiritual means and medical professionals. Seeking help from doctors, therapists, and support groups is not a sign of distrust in God but rather utilizing the resources He has made available for our well-being.
Scripture portrays individuals who experienced profound emotional distress, even despair, like David in the Psalms or Elijah in 1 Kings. These accounts remind us that intense emotional suffering is part of the human experience, and God is intimately acquainted with our grief and pain. He invites us to cast our burdens upon Him, promising to sustain us through challenging times, even when the exact cause of our distress is biological.
Therefore, we should approach mental illness with compassion, understanding, and a commitment to seeking appropriate care. The Church should be a safe and supportive community where believers can openly discuss their mental health struggles without fear of judgment. Let us extend grace, offer practical help, and point one another to the God who heals and restores, body, mind, and spirit.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we pray for all those experiencing mental illness, asking You to bring comfort, healing, and peace to their minds and hearts. Guide them to the right resources and support, and strengthen their faith through every challenge. In Jesus' name, amen.
