How do I truly forgive someone who deeply hurt me?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScriptureColossians 3:13
Forgiveness can feel like an incredibly difficult mountain to climb, especially when the wound is deep and the pain still fresh. It's important to understand that forgiveness is less about condoning the wrong and more about releasing yourself from the burden of bitterness and resentment. It's a choice you make, often repeatedly, to surrender the right to get even or hold the offense against the other person. This doesn't mean forgetting what happened, but rather choosing not to be controlled by it any longer. It's a journey, not a one-time event, and God is with you every step of the way.
The Bible calls us to forgive as Christ forgave us, which is a high standard but also a liberating one. Jesus, on the cross, prayed for His tormentors, demonstrating the ultimate act of forgiveness. This divine example teaches us that true forgiveness is empowered by God's grace, not by our own strength. When we lean on Him, He provides the supernatural capacity to release the hurt. It's about recognizing that holding onto anger only harms us, preventing us from experiencing the peace and freedom that God desires for us.
Practically, this process often involves lamenting your pain to God, expressing the raw emotions you feel. Acknowledge the injustice and the hurt without minimizing it. Then, consciously choose to let go of the desire for revenge or to see the other person suffer. Pray for the person who hurt you, not necessarily that they succeed in their wrongdoing, but that God would work in their heart and bring them to repentance. This act of intercession, though challenging, can profoundly shift your own heart towards healing and compassion.
Ultimately, forgiveness is a profound act of faith, trusting God to be your vindicator and healer. It’s an act of obedience that unlocks spiritual blessings and frees you to move forward in your relationship with Him and others. Remember that God's grace is sufficient for you, and He will strengthen you to do what seems impossible in your own power. As you extend forgiveness, even imperfectly, you open the door for God’s healing balm to soothe your soul and restore your peace.
Prayer
Dear Lord, I confess that forgiving someone who has deeply hurt me feels overwhelming. Please grant me the grace and strength to release this pain and choose forgiveness. Help me to trust You with my hurt and allow Your peace to fill my heart. In Jesus' name, amen.
