How do I answer 'the Bible was written by men'?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
Scripture2 Timothy 3:16
It's true that human hands penned the words of the Bible. Prophets, kings, fishermen, and scholars all contributed, each writing from their unique context and personality. However, the Bible itself claims a much higher authorship. Think of it like a beautiful symphony: many musicians play, but there is one composer who conceived the entire masterpiece. In the same way, while men were the instruments, God was the divine Composer, orchestrating every word. This is what we mean when we say the Bible is "God-breathed." It carries His authority and perfect wisdom, even though delivered through human vessels.
This divine inspiration doesn't mean the human authors were robots or that their personalities were erased. On the contrary, God used their individual styles, vocabulary, and even life experiences to communicate His truth. For example, Luke, a physician, wrote with meticulous detail, while Peter, a fisherman, wrote with straightforward passion. This diversity of human expression, under the unified guidance of the Holy Spirit, makes the Bible relatable and rich. It demonstrates God's incredible ability to work through us, imperfect as we are, to accomplish His perfect will.
Consider , which states, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." The word "inspiration" literally means "God-breathed." It signifies that the Bible originates from God Himself. While men wrote it down, they did so under the direct superintendence of the Holy Spirit, ensuring that what they wrote was precisely what God intended to communicate. This divine origin guarantees its truthfulness, reliability, and authority for our lives.
So, when someone says the Bible was written by men, you can affirm that fact, but then gently add the crucial clarification: "Yes, but it was inspired by God." It's not merely ancient literature; it's God's living Word communicated through human means. This understanding gives it unique power and relevance for every generation, including ours. It means we can trust its message as directly from our Creator, guiding us in all truth and wisdom.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your inspired Word, given to us through human hands but breathed out by Your Spirit. Help me to grasp its truth and live by its guidance daily. May I always trust in its divine origin and power. In Jesus' name, amen.
