How do I explain the gospel to a Muslim friend?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

John 3:16

Explaining the gospel to a Muslim friend requires a loving heart, a listening ear, and a clear understanding of the core Christian message, which can feel quite different from Islamic theology. Start by building a genuine relationship based on respect and trust. Understand their beliefs and worldview, asking open-ended questions about their faith, what they value, and their understanding of God. This approach helps you identify common ground and prepares the way for sharing your own beliefs in a way that resonates with them, rather than confronting or dismissing their deeply held convictions.

When you share, focus on the person of Jesus Christ. Many Muslims revere Jesus as a prophet, so starting there can be a point of connection. Gently explain who Jesus is to Christians: not just a prophet, but the Son of God, fully God and fully man, who came to earth to bridge the gap between a holy God and sinful humanity. Emphasize His perfect life, His sacrificial death on the cross as an atonement for sins, and His resurrection, which offers eternal life and a restored relationship with God to all who believe in Him.

Highlight the concepts of grace and God's unconditional love. In Islam, salvation is often seen as a balance of good deeds outweighing bad. The Christian message of salvation by grace through faith, not by works (), can be a profound and liberating concept. Explain that God's love is so great that He provided the ultimate sacrifice through Jesus, making it possible for us to be forgiven and have a close, personal relationship with Him, not earned through endless striving, but received as a gift.

Always rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance, both in what to say and when to say it. Be patient, as understanding and accepting such deeply different truths takes time and often a journey of many conversations. Emphasize that the gospel is about a relationship with a loving Father, where peace, assurance, and hope are found. Your testimony of how Jesus has transformed your life can be a powerful witness, illustrating the reality of the gospel in a tangible way.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, grant me wisdom and love as I share the truth of Your Son, Jesus. Open the heart of my friend to receive Your grace and understanding. May Your Spirit guide my words and actions, all for Your glory. In Jesus' name, amen.
