Who is the Holy Spirit and what does He do?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

John 16:7-8

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Triune God, God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit. He is not merely an impersonal force or an emanation; rather, He is a distinct, divine Person with intellect, emotions, and will, fully God in every sense. He is co-equal, co-eternal, and co-existent with the Father and the Son, sharing in the same divine nature and glory. Understanding the Holy Spirit as a Person helps us to relate to Him in a meaningful and personal way, acknowledging His active presence and work in our lives.

His primary work in the life of a believer, and indeed in the world, is to glorify Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, drawing hearts to repentance and faith in Christ. Upon salvation, He indwells every believer, sealing us for the day of redemption and assuring us of our inheritance in Christ. This indwelling means we are never truly alone; we carry the very presence of God within us, guiding, comforting, and empowering us for the spiritual journey ahead. His presence is a constant source of strength and hope.

Beyond salvation, the Holy Spirit continues to work actively in our lives, transforming us into the likeness of Christ. He illuminates the Scriptures, helping us to understand God's Word more deeply and apply it to our daily lives. He empowers us to live a life pleasing to God, providing strength to overcome temptation and bearing the fruit of His character in us, love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. It is through His power that we can live out our callings and serve God effectively.

Furthermore, the Holy Spirit bestows spiritual gifts upon believers, equipping us to build up the body of Christ and further God's kingdom. These gifts are diverse and given for the common good, enabling us to minister to one another and to the world with supernatural ability. He also intercedes for us with groanings which cannot be uttered, helping us in our weakness when we don't know how to pray. His constant work is to draw us closer to God, enabling us to walk in obedience and experience the fullness of life in Christ.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the precious gift of Your Holy Spirit, our Comforter, Guide, and Empowerment. Please help us to discern His voice, yield to His working in our lives, and walk in step with Him each day. In Jesus' name, amen.
