How do I teach Scripture to my kids?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Teaching Scripture to your children is a beautiful and vital privilege, one that starts less with formal lessons and more with modeling a life lived by God's Word. Begin by consistently integrating the Bible into your family's daily rhythm. This doesn't mean always sitting down for long, intense studies, but perhaps reading a short passage at breakfast, discussing a Bible story during car rides, or praying together before bedtime. Let them see your own delight and reliance on God's Word, as your genuine love for truth will be contagious and will cultivate a similar hunger in their hearts.

Keep it age-appropriate and interactive. For younger children, storybook Bibles with engaging illustrations are wonderful tools. Act out stories, sing Bible songs, or use puppets to bring characters to life. As they grow older, move into simplified biblical texts, discussing the characters, settings, and lessons in ways they can grasp. Encourage questions, even the challenging ones, and be willing to admit when you don't know an answer, then seek it out together. Make learning about God fun and something they anticipate.

Emphasize the practical application of Scripture in their lives. It's not just about knowing facts, but about understanding how God's Word shapes our character, guides our decisions, and helps us navigate life's ups and downs. When a conflict arises, gently remind them of biblical principles on forgiveness or kindness. When they face a fear, point them to verses about God's strength and presence. Show them that the Bible isn't just an ancient book, but a living, active guide for their everyday experiences.

Remember, your faithfulness in planting these seeds is more important than immediate results. The Holy Spirit is the ultimate teacher, and He will work through your efforts, watering those seeds of truth in their hearts. Be patient, be consistent, and above all, pray diligently for your children's spiritual growth. Trust that God, who commanded us to teach His statutes diligently to our children, will equip and empower you for this sacred task. Your efforts are an investment in their eternal well-being.

Prayer

Dear Lord, please guide me as I seek to teach Your precious Word to my children. Give me wisdom, patience, and creativity to share Your truths in a way that captures their hearts and transforms their lives. In Jesus' name, amen.
